TEENS

All about teens

The sooner teens start, the greater the results

One corner stone of a holistic approach to health and vitality can be summarized in the common expression ‘an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.' And what better times to start down the path of lifelong wellness than in your teens. The adolescent years have unique nutrient requirements and set the groundwork for future health.

Research shows: North American teens lack balanced nutrient intake

Recent studies indicate that many North American teens are not meeting their daily nutritional requirements and are paying a price for it in terms of both their health and appearance. Vitamin and mineral deficiency has been linked to problems common among teens like skin blemishes, lack of energy, mood swings and poor concentration. Evidence shows that inadequate nutrition during adolescence may contribute to ongoing health issues.

In a joint Canadian/US study, lower dietary intake of antioxidants (vitamins A, C, E and Omega-3 fatty acids) was demonstrated to increase the risk of respiratory problems like coughs, asthma and lung infections. The lead researcher had this to say: "Vitamin supplements can help teens meet their daily recommended levels, and surprisingly, even relatively low levels of omega-3 fatty acids appeared to protect teens from higher reported respiratory symptoms."

Teens have different needs

Clear, healthy skin

Long term health concerns may not be top of mind for most teens but acne is a condition that will afflict about 80% of all teenagers between the ages of 12 to 24. Acne is more common in teenage boys as the level of male hormones (androgens) increase. Boys are not alone though, during puberty androgens increase in both sexes making both genders susceptible to acne. Androgens may lead to an over production of keratin and sebum which clog pores and in turn allow bacteria to proliferate and give rise to increased outbreaks of acne.

Sharp vision

Essential fatty acids are an important component to not only healthy skin but play an integral role in the development of many structures and systems within the body. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) a component within fish oil has been shown to be very important in the development of proper vision. In particular, retinal photoreceptors depend upon adequate supplies of DHA. As well, the light absorbing retinal pigment is made up of vitamin A and protein, which are continually being used up as images are formed, adequate supplies of these nutrients are vital for eye function.

Strong bones and teeth

About half of the adult skeleton is formed in the teen years of rapid growth. Acid/alkaline balance is an important factor in building strong bones. A diet of fast food, soda pop and caffeinated drinks may make the body too acidic resulting in increased calcium excretion.

Improved cognitive function

Fish oils are considered by many people to be "brain food." A recent article in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition stated "changes in brain concentrations of DHA are positively associated with changes in cognitive and behavioral performance."
