Joint care de-constructed

A Canadian study found that over 4 million Canadians suffer from debilitating symptoms or arthritis – pain and inflammation.  This number is expected to grow to 6 million by 2026. And by the looks of store shelves, it seems like there is a different joint care product for each one of them. With that wide selection, it can be difficult to know what to look for in a joint care supplement and whether the one you choose will deliver the relief it claims.

The Top Three

Glucosamine, chondroitin and hyaluronic acid

Glucosamine and chondroitin are the gold standard in joint care and are found in most high quality products. Backed by thousands of studies, glucosamine is an important building block of cartilage that helps reduce pain, restore function and repair cartilage. In fact, a study conducted at the University of Alberta comparing glucosamine to the anti-inflammatory drug Ibuprofen found that “Glucosamine Sulfate had a significantly greater influence in reducing pain produced during function and [the] effect of pain with daily activities.”

Chondroitin, a major constituent of cartilage, has an equally significant role in joint health. It provides structure, holds water and nutrients and allows other molecules to move through cartilage—an important property, as there is no blood supply to cartilage. This effect allows it to promote elasticity in and prevent the breakdown of cartilage.

Recently a third ingredient has been added to this elite list: hylaronic acid (HA). Though its mechanism of action is not completely understood, HA is known to be a major component of synovial fluid, the lubricating substance between joints, and an important component of cartilage. HA is believed to improve the viscosity of the joint fluid, thereby lubricating and cushioning the joint, and producing an analgesic effect.

Best of all, all three of these ingredients are well tolerated by most people and do not have the negative side effects of over-the-counter medications.

Herb Aid

Herbalists aside, it is a little known fact that the correct combination of herbs can improve the efficacy of a joint care supplement and reduce or eliminate its potential side effects.

Curcumin, a spice found in curry powder, is a powerful antioxidant that has been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic medicine to treat inflammation and arthritis. Boswellia and Devil’s Claw have similar effects. Licorice is known to reduce swelling of the joints and White Willow Bark, a precursor to aspirin, is a revered folk remedy that has been prescribed for aches, pains and fever since the 5th century BC by Hippocrates, the father of medicine.

Taken together, the benefit of these herbs is greater than the whole of the parts—providing synergistic effects for almost immediate relief from pain and inflammation.

Facilitating Fats

Omega-3 fatty acids have clinically proven anti-inflammatory effects, particularly those in fish oil, called EPA and DHA. Numerous double-blind trials have shown that fish oil partially relieves symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. In addition, essential fatty acids play a significant role in facilitating the absorption of nutrients from the gut.
