HEART

Your heart matters

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in adult Canadian men and women. There are some risk factors you can't change. However, you should know about them and how they might affect your health.

Risk factors you can't change:

Family history - Your risk is higher if any of your immediate family members (mother, father, sibling child) have had a heart attack (especially before the age of 65 in women and 55 in men) or if they have high cholesterol or high blood pressure.
Age - As you grow older, your chances of developing heart disease increases. Men over 45 years and women over 55 years or who have finished menopause are at an increased risk for heart disease.
Sex - Men have a higher risk than women. The risk for women increases after menopause.

The changes

Smoking

Stop smoking

High-fat diet

Limit your fat intake

High blood cholesterol levels

Reduce your blood cholesterol to recommended levels

Overweight

Reduce to and maintain a healthy weight

Physical Inactivity

Engage in regular physical activity

Hypertension

Reduce and maintain your blood pressure at a normal level

CoQ10

High blood cholesterol levels and hypertension are the two risk factors that many people require medication to manage. Statin drugs are used by many doctors to reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. However, an adverse consequence to statin use is decreased levels of coenzyme Q10 (ubiquinone).  Platinum Naturals’ Easy-Q® is a naturally fermented coenzyme Q10 with clinically proven data revealing it to be 30% better absorbed than many of its competitors.

Fish oil

EPA, a component of fish oil, has been shown in numerous studies to increase arterial blood flow (reduce high blood pressure) and lower bad cholesterol. Another study on the benefits of EPA was published in The Lancet in March 2007. This study involved over 18,000 patients with unhealthy cholesterol levels. The patients were randomly assigned to receive either 1,800 mg a day of EPA with a statin drug or a statin drug alone. The trial went on for a total of five years. It was found at the end of the study those patients in the EPA group had superior cardiovascular function. Non-fatal coronary events were also significantly reduced in the EPA group. The authors concluded that EPA is a promising treatment for prevention of major coronary events, especially non-fatal coronary events.
