Can Canadian athletes trust nutritional supplements?

TORONTO: Platinum Naturals Inc. announced today that there is now a way to minimize the risk that a dietary supplement or sports nutrition product contains banned substances. NSF International has established a testing and certification program, NSF Certified for Sport™, that verifies label claims, protects against adulteration of products and identifies inappropriate substances. Activ-X multivitamin from Platinum Naturals is among the first Canadian products under review.

NSF is a not-for-profit public health organization committed to testing and certifying a wide range of supplements, food, water and nutritional products. The NSF Certified for Sport program is the only testing program recognized by key athletic organizations, including Major League Baseball, the National Football League and the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport. Platinum Naturals is one of the only Canadian-based companies submitting a multi-vitamin through the rigorous process to become certified for sport.

Athletes look for a competitive edge and take vitamin and mineral supplements to help them achieve peak performance. However, according to a recent study, 1 in 4 dietary supplements were contaminated with banned substances (Informed Choice, 2007). “Banned substances are a significant threat to my career. I’m looking forward to the day when I absolutely know that what I’m taking is clean,” says Nicole Guembel, Iron Man Triathlete.

The concern over multi-vitamin supplements will no longer haunt athletes, coaches and professional sports organizations. Platinum Naturals is raising the bar for the supplements industry and hoping that others will follow their example and do their part in keeping Canadian Athletes Clean.
